The State of Texas has one of the richest histories, more so than almost any other state in the Union. Filled with names like Stephen F. Austin, Jean Lafitte, William Barret Travis, Jim Bowie, Davy Crockett and Sam Houston, Texas has the distinction of having been the only state in the American Union to have ever been its own Country for 12 years until its annexation. in this course, we will study the early days of Texas, leading up to the Texas Revolution, the Texas Revolution itself, and the Republic of Texas era leading up to Annexation of Texas into the United States. We will also explore the steps leading up to Texas Secession at the start of the Civil War, its role during the war, and the very painful and destructive Reconstruction period. We will then look at the Indian Wars, the rise of the Cattle Kingdom, the closing of the Open Range with the expansion of the Railroads, and the beginning of the modern era in Texas with the discovery of Oil at a place called Spindletop. So saddle up cowboy! It is going to be quite a ride, and quite a year.
